Would AI Recommend Your Business? Or Your Competitor?

News

What business owners should know about being found, understood and trusted in AI-powered search.

A potential customer needs a service your business provides. A few years ago, that person probably opened Google and started clicking links. Today, they may ask ChatGPT, Gemini or another AI tool to compare options and recommend a place to start.

While researching AI responses about our clients, we found varying degrees of accuracy depending on the platform — and that inaccurate details often matched outdated information found on websites or online listings.

AI cannot visit your office, meet your employees or hear your best customer sing your praises over lunch. It works with the information it can find, and AI is many things, but a mind reader is not one of them.

For business owners, improving AI visibility comes down to a few practical principles:

  • Clearly explain what your business does.
  • Keep information consistent across the web.
  • Build credibility beyond your website.
  • Make important information easy to find.
  • Give interested customers a clear next step.
  • Measure patterns instead of relying on one answer.

Many of these principles have supported traditional search visibility for years. What has changed is how information is collected, combined and presented to potential customers.

Be clear about what your business does

Phrases such as “innovative solutions,” “unmatched service” and “a commitment to excellence” may sound impressive, but they do not explain what a business actually does.

Clear content should identify the services you provide, the customers you serve, where you operate and why your experience is relevant. If someone unfamiliar with your company can’t quickly understand those things, AI may struggle as well.

Keep your information consistent

Your website is important, but it’s not the only place shaping the story. AI may also encounter information from business listings, reviews, news articles and other websites.

If your website lists one set of hours while your Google profile lists another, which one should be trusted? The same issue can occur with addresses, phone numbers, services and business categories. Keeping those details accurate across the web reduces confusion for customers and gives AI a clearer picture of your business.

It may not be glamorous work, but it is better than discovering AI showing potential customers the wrong hours.

Build credibility beyond your website

AI does not have to rely only on what a company says about itself. Customer reviews, news coverage and professional recognition can help confirm a company’s experience and reputation. Partnerships, industry associations and mentions from credible organizations add useful context, too.

Outside recognition does not guarantee a recommendation, but it provides additional information that may help confirm a company’s experience and reputation.

Make important information easy to find

Behind-the-scenes improvements can make website information easier for search systems to interpret. For example, clearly organized information about locations, services, products and events can provide more context about a business.

Giving each page a clear purpose also helps. Multiple pages can mention the same product or service, but problems may arise when they repeat or contradict one another. We have found that consolidating overlapping content can provide a clearer, more current source of information.

There is no magic AI switch. Websites do not need a special AI file or a separate version written for AI to appear in its AI-powered search features. Useful information and a website that works well for people remain the foundation.

Make visibility useful

Appearing in an AI answer is not the finish line. A business can earn mentions without receiving more calls, visits, inquiries or purchases.

Someone who continues to your website may want more detail, proof that your business is the right choice or a way to take action. A clear, well-organized website should confirm the service or location they searched for and make the next step obvious.

AI visibility creates opportunity. Its value depends on whether it helps the right people move toward taking action.

Measure patterns, not one answer

AI answers can change based on the platform, wording, location and sources available at that moment. A company might appear in one response but not another, or be recommended for a service while being overlooked for something else it does equally well.

Several platforms can track AI visibility. We use CJRW Beacon AI to bring those signals together with traditional search performance and business-listing accuracy. It helps show where a brand is being recognized within the questions being monitored, where information may be missing and what should be addressed next.

The goal is not to chase every change. It is to identify patterns and determine whether a business is becoming easier to find, understand and trust.

AI is changing how people discover and evaluate businesses, but not what makes a business worth choosing. Expertise, reputation, clear information and customer experience still matter. The opportunity is to make those strengths easier to recognize wherever people are looking for answers.
